MELBOURNE — Ten lacquer paintings by some of Viet Nam’s masters like Tran Van Can, Nguyen Sang, Nguyen Tu Nghiem and Phan Ke An and dozens of prize-wining photos have been on display at an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia.

The event has attracted many Vietnamese residents of the city, as well as other locals and tourists.

The photos feature tangible and intangible heritages of the country like Hue Imperial Citadel, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An Ancient Town, Phong Nha- Ke Bang Park, gongs in the Central Highlands and Bac Ninh duet singing.

According to Tran Thi Thu Dong, deputy director of the culture ministry’s Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition Department, lacquer is material unique to Vietnamese painting.

"The creativity of the great artists has brought about the diversity and special identity of Vietnamese lacquer art," she said.

She said she hoped the exhibition – a cultural activity celebrating the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries – would introduce Viet Nam’s landscapes, culture and arts to Australian audiences.

Tran Ba Phuc, chairman of the Vietnamese Business Association in Australia, said he appreciated the art works on display.

"The event will bring more than 320,000 Vietnamese people living in Australia closer to their homeland," he said.

The event was held in Melbourne Marriot Hotel from December 14 to 18. — VNS
