Da Nang prepares to explode in glory

DA NANG — Colours of peace, love and friendship will light up the sky over Da Nang city when the local fireworks team performs tonight, said municipal music association's vice chairman Tran Ai Nghia.

The composer, who wrote the literary and musical scripts for the Vietnamese team, said the show would feature the Han River, vast skies, imposing mountains, charming bridges and modern buildings.

He said the music will be a mixture of Quang Nam folk-songs and Samba rhythms. Train whistles and the sound of cranes and machines are also employed to enrich the content.

The foreign competitors promised to offer varying tones of emotion with their shows.

"We will bring images that promote the vitality of the river, from its slow flows to frenzied streams during storms," said Antonio Parente, head of the Italian team.

"Our music will be bold contrast of Italian styles with long and slow melodies," he added.

Rebecca Song from the Chinese team said her group will feature special images of waves, sailing boats and dawn lights to sing the praise of the river's beauty.

English team leader Andrew Wiggins said his team would also harmonise sounds and lights to display the unique characteristics of his country, while describing the Han River swiftly pouring into the enormous ocean.

"With our performance, the audience will feel every breath and beat of the river," said Jang Cheol Lee from South Korea, noting that phoenixes would symbolise the aspirations of the Da Nang people.

The fourth Da Nang International Fireworks Competition opens at 8.20pm this evening with teams from Viet Nam, Britain and South Korea. Italy and China will perform tomorrow. — VNS
