Southern ethnic costumes on show

CAN THO — An exhibition of costumes worn in the southern region and photos of them has opened at Can Tho Museum.

Besides the majority Kinh, many other ethnic groups like the Cham, Khmer, BaNa, EDe and Stieng also live here.

Each group has its own distinct costumes both for daily life and important events.

The exhibition, held in co-operation with the Viet Nam Southern Women's Museum also features jewels like ear-rings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings made of gold, silver, crystal and stone.

The highlights are rare traditional costumes like hat with glass beads used by Khmer brides in Can Tho and those worn by women musicians in the early 20th century, and printed materials about the birth of the ao dai.

The exhibition, being organised to mark the 36th anniversary of the liberation of the south and country's reunification, will go on until August 14.

Sam Son tourism week wraps up

THANH HOA — Sam Son Tourism Week wraps up in Thanh Hoa Province's Sam Son District tomorrow.

The event has attracted tourists with performances and beach games at Sam Son Beach.

Old Quarter history honoured

HA NOI — A series of events under the theme Vao Ha (Into the Summer) is taking place in the capital city's Old Quarter through Tuesday.

The Ancient House at 87 Ma May Street is hosting an exhibition of works by painter Dang Phuong Viet entitled Sen Viet (Vietnamese Lotus), while the Kim Ngan Communal House at 42-44 Hang Bac Street is hosting silver and gold jewelry-making demonstration and a display of calligraphy by Nguyen Quang Thang.

Demonstration and talks on the Vietnamese martial art of Vovinam are also be given by Vovinam masters, and tea-drinking ceremonies are being held, at the Old Quarter Information Centre at 28 Hang Buom.

The events have been organised by the Old Quarter Management Board on the occasion of Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day with the aim to promote cultural heritage and the image of the Ha Noi Old Quarter.

Revolutionary display by vet artist

HA NOI — Fifty paintings by Le Ba Dang are being displayed in an exhibition entitled Revolution in Arts of Le Ba Dang at the Viet Nam Revolution Museum. The works were selected from hundreds of paintings in different media made during his 60-year career.

The artist, who was born in 1921 in the central province of Quang Tri, will donate some paintings to the museum.

Viet Nam vies in global pageant

HA NOI — Phan Thi Huong Giang will represent Viet Nam in the Miss Global Beauty Queen pageant in Seoul, South Korea on May 3-10.

The pageant, with the theme Beauty with Heart, will include traditional dress, evening dress and swimsuit competitions and will raise funds for natural disaster victims around the world. The public can vote for contestants online at vote.missglobalbeauty.org/vote/vote.php.

The top 15 will qualify for the semi-final.

Thai billionaire shoots Mekong doc

HA NOI — A documentary on the Greater Mekong sub-region has been shot in Viet Nam by Thai billionaire Vikrom Kromadit, CEO of Amata Corp PCL.

At a press briefing held at the Embassy of Thailand in Ha Noi on Wednesday, the businessman said the documentary would last for 20 minutes, and feature the cultures, lives, tourism potential and economic situations of the countries in the Mekong sub-region.

He said the film was aimed at strengthening mutual understanding among people in the area.

When completed, the documentary will be screened on Thailand's Channel 9, China's CCTV and Japan's NHK. — VNS
