HA NOI — Vietnamese cueist Tran Quyet Chien rose eight spots, from 18th to 10th place in the latest World Union of Billiards (UMB)’s three-cushion rankings, announced the UMB yesterday.

Chien won the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup which wrapped up in HCM City on Sunday, making history as the first Vietnamese World Cup champion.

With the victory, the southern province of Ca Mau-born player was awarded prize money of US$18,682 and added 80 points to his ranking score, bringing the total to 227 and driving his rise up the table.

“My result today is a driving force for myself as well as for many Vietnamese cueists who love billiards,” said Chien.

Besides Chien, two Vietnamese players also jumped to high positions. Ngo Dinh Nai, who came second in the World Cup, increased 10 spots to world No 20. While Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, who got the bronze medal, jumped one spot to 14th place.

Chien and his teammates will next compete in the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup in Belgium on June 11-17. — VNS
