HA NOI — Viet Nam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh beat Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk on Tuesday in the first round of the Singapore Badminton Open 2018.
Minh, ranked 73 in the world, beat Saensomboonsuk (35) 2-1 in the men’s singles.
Having won the first set 21/9, Minh out in the second 21/14 before restoring order and taking the decisive third set 21/9.
Minh will face Indian Sourabh Verma, world ranking 78, in the second round.
In the women’s singles, Vu Thi Trang, ranked 56, lost to Japan’s Takahashi Sayaka, ranked 17, 2-0 (11/21, 16/21). — VNS
