HA NOI — Hoang Thi Bao Tram remained top in the rankings with five points in the women’s category at the Zone 3-3 Chess Championships yesterday in the Philippines.
Tram defeated Indonesian Irine Kharisma Sukandar in the sixth round. She will now face Fronda Jan Jodilyn from the host nation.
Two other Vietnamese representatives Vo Thi Kim Phung and Luong Phuong Hanh were the runners-up with 4.5 points and four points, respectively.
Phung bested Gong Qianyun of Singapore, while Hanh beat her teammate Le Thanh Tu.
In the seventh round, Phung will meet Hanh.
Fourth and fifth position went to Jodilyn of the Philippines and Viet Nam’s Nguyen Thi Thanh An, also with four points.
In the open category, Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia topped the rankings with 5.5 points after defeating Dimakiling Oliver of the Philippines in the sixth round.
Tian will meet Megaranto Susanto of Indonesia in the next round.
Second and third place were nabbed by Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Viet Nam and Liu Xiangyi of Singapore with 4.5 points each.
In the seventh round, Son will battle Xiangyi. — VNS
