Việt Nam teams shine at Chess Olympiad

HA NOI — Both the Viet Nam women’s and men’s chess teams had a win in the ninth round to improve their rankings at the ongoing 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Wednesday.

The Viet Nam men’s team beat Swiss 4-0. Following this victory, Viet Nam rose six steps to 12 place out of 185 teams in the world.

Le Quang Liem beat Yannick Pelletier and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son continued to beat Nico Georgiadis. Tran Tuan Minh and 16-year-old Nguyen Anh Khoi also defeated their rivals.

In the penultimate round, Viet Nam will face Germany, who are in 16th place, with the aim of ranking in top 10.

On the women’s side, Viet Nam also bested the hosts Georgia 3 3.5-0.5.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen, born in the southern province of Can Tho, tied with Nino Khurtsidze. Three other Vietnamese representatives Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong also defeated their rivals.

After nine rounds, the Viet Nam women’s team moved to 10th placeout of 150 teams. They will take on Hungary, eighth place, in the 10th round. — VNS
