HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam beat a drum to open the second World Championship of Viet Nam Traditional Martial Arts in Ha Noi on Thursday.

The event drew 279 martial artists from 43 teams of 29 nations and territories worldwide.

In his opening remarks, Director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, To Van Dong, said Vietnamese traditional martial arts, a precious heritage of the nation, have become increasingly popular globally.

Besides creating favourable conditions for martial art sects to exchange experience, the tournament also serves to encourage the development of Vietnamese martial arts and promote Viet Nam’s culture and tradition, he noted.

The four-day event at My Dinh Indoor Athletics Gymnasium will see performances of both domestic and foreign athletes, especially those coming from countries with robust development of Vietnamese traditional martial arts like France, Russia, India, Germany, Italy, Laos and Algeria, among others.

The tournament is being held by the World Federation of Vietnamese Traditional Martial Arts (WFVV) and Ha Noi’s Department of Culture and Sports.

It will end on Sunday.
