HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese films with English subtitles will be screened for free at cinemas and cultural centres nationwide to highlight the national revolution and other important events.
The opening ceremony of the programme takes place today (April 24) in the northern province of Điện Biên. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will hold the programme until May 20 to celebrate anniversaries such as the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30), May Day (May 1), President Hồ’s birthday (May 19) and 65 years since the Điện Biên Phủ victory (May 7, 1954).
During the programme, many films on the resistance war, President Hồ Chí Minh and the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign will be screened.
The feature film Sống Cùng Lịch Sử (Living with History), directed by People’s Artist Nguyễn Thanh Vân and documentary Chuyện Những Người Lính Già (Stories of Old Veterans), directed by Dương Ngọc Hòa will kick off the programme.
The feature film tells the story of young people who travel to Điện Biên Province and learn about the glorious victory of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign in 1954. They learn some lessons from those who sacrificed themselves for the revolution.
The documentary recalls memories of veterans who fought bravely during the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign.
Other documentaries reflect historical events relating to the Gianh River in the central province of Quảng Bình, and the Thiện Duyên house where poor and vulnerable people are given shelter.

The only animated film to be screened on this occasion is Truyền Thuyết Chiếc Khăn Piêu (Tale of Piêu Scarf). Piêu is known as a symbol of love and desire for a happy life in Thái ethnic culture. The animation is directed by Trần Khánh Duyên, 42, and produced by the Việt Nam Animation Studio.
Thạch Thảo (Forget Me Not), directed by Mai Thế Hiệp, will also be shown. It’s a beautiful story about friendship of high school students, family ties, sentiment between teachers and students. When facing obstacles and conflict, young people learn to solve problems, help each other and get up again. The film debuted last year.
These films will be distributed and screened at cinemas and local theatres. In the framework of the programme, the film crews of Forget Me Not and Stories of Old Veterans will speak with soldiers and students in Điện Biên Province. VNS
