HCM CITY – The HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will stage the classic ballet Giselle, which is considered one of the great Romantic ballets, at the Opera House on October 20 and 21.

The two-act ballet about love, deception and human nature was originally choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot to music composed by Adolphe Adam.

The work was first performed by the Paris Opera Ballet in 1841 and quickly appeared on stages all around the world.

The HBSO’s version is staged by French dancer and choreographer Chloe Glemot and Japanese dancer Yuki Hiroshige, who collaborated with HBSO in many productions such as Cinderella and The Nut Cracker.

The ballet is set in a small village where Giselle, a young peasant girl, falls in love with a nobleman, Albrecht. She then finds out her lover has promised to marry someone else, and dies of a broken heart.

In her afterlife, Giselle become a member of The Wilis, a group of ghostly spirits of an unmarried woman who dies after being betrayed by her lover and takes revenge by dancing men to death.

The ballet reaches its climax as Giselle finds Albrecht and must decide if she should enact her revenge or show forgiveness.
