HCM CITY — Vietnamese-American singer Huong Lan will stage a solo performance in HCM City at a special show to celebrate her 50 years in the music.

Lan will appear with her colleagues, Vietnamese-American singers Y Lan and Quang Le, who have performed many times in Viet Nam, and young singers such as Ngoc Linh, Ha Van and Bich Thuy of HCM City.

Around 2,000 people are expected to attend the show called Mot Doi San Khau (A Life in the Theatre), which will be staged at Hoa Binh Theatre.

Lan will sing folk songs by composers Bac Son and Tran Thien Thanh that shot her to fame in the 1970s and 80s.

Featured songs will include Em Di Tren Co Non (I’m Walking on Grass), Con Thuong Rau Dang Moc Sau He (Love for Bitter Vegetables Behind the House) and Chiec Ao Ba Ba (Southern Traditional Shirt for Women).

The 62-year-old artist moved from Viet Nam to live in France in 1982, but her “love for singing in the homeland is still fresh”, she said in an interview with local media.

Lan will also perform vong co (nostalgia) songs, a genre of traditional music used in cai luong (reformed opera), together with guest singers, People’s Artist Ngoc Giau and Meritorious Artist Hoai Linh.

Born in Sai Gon in 1956, Lan showed her musical talent when she was at school.

She began her professional career by singing cai luong under training from her father, famous composer Huu Phuoc. She later performed pop music and quickly became a star.

She has performed in many concerts and music festivals in France, Canada and the US, and worked with Thuy Nga Paris By Night, a music show produced by Thuy Nga Productions in Paris.

After moving to California, she worked with music producers and entertainment agencies and performed on many albums and videos.

Her show will begin at 8pm on June 2 at Hoa Binh Theatre, 240 Ba Thang Hai Street, District 10. Tickets are available at the box office. — VNS
