HCM CITY — Nguyễn Thùy Linh has claimed victory at the Vietnam Open Badminton Tournament for the third year in a row.
In the final on Sunday, Linh defeated Japan's Kaoru Sugiyama with a score of 2-0. Linh, Việt Nam's top female player and currently ranked 26th in the world, faced off against Sugiyama, who is ranked 60th.
Sugiyama opened the score, but Linh quickly responded with seven consecutive points to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Despite a strong effort from Sugiyama, Linh maintained her advantage and secured the first set with a score of 21-15.
In the second set, Linh showcased her mental resilience, scoring two crucial points in the final moments to clinch the game 22-20.
With this victory, Linh has now won the women's singles championship at the Vietnam Open for three consecutive years, having triumphed in 2022 and 2023.
Other champions included Adnan Maulana and Sari Jamil (Indonesia) in the mixed doubles, Shogo Ogawa (Japan) in the men's singles, Mizuki Otake and Miyu Takahashi (Japan) in women's doubles and Zhi-Wei He and Huang Jui-Hsuan (Chinese Taipei) in men's doubles.
The tournament, held from September 10 to 15, attracted 307 athletes from 22 countries and territories. The singles champion received a prize purse of US$7,500. VNS
