Phạm Văn Mách has just secured his sixth world bodybuilding championship in South Korea at the age of 47. He ventured to get job in HCM City in 1997 and discovered his passion for bodybuilding. Over his 25-year career, he has claimed six world championships and also emerged victorious in the Asian championship on eight occasions. Thanh Nga talks with him.
Inner Sanctum: Congratulations on your victory in the 55kg weight class at the 14th WBPF World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships & Congress in South Korea. How do you feel about this success for the sixth time?
Thank you. I am genuinely ecstatic, and this joy feels even more profound because my preparation for this event was entirely distinct from my previous experiences. Since my last world championship appearance in 2017, I harboured concerns about the progress of my competitors and my own physical condition. I was unsure if I could regain the same level of strength as before. Nevertheless, these factors did not deter me. Fuelled by my passion, I dedicated myself to proper exercises and nutrition to shape my muscles according to my desires. Consequently, standing atop the world podium felt different, evoking the same emotions I felt when I first won the world championship.

Inner Sanctum: What challenges have you encountered in your pursuit of success?
I have encountered numerous challenges, but the most significant one has always been personal budget. Finances have a profound impact on one's psychology. When financial stability is achieved, I can train with a content and secure mind, focusing entirely on my training. However, when financial difficulties arise, it becomes impossible to feel at ease during training, hindering progress and impeding physical development.
Inner Sanctum: What preparation and training process did you undergo for this year's world bodybuilding championship?
The preparation for this world championship took approximately five months. I trained for about three hours each day, three times more than my usual routine.
In addition to encountering formidable athletes from countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar, I observed that athletes from other nations consistently made remarkable progress each year. Therefore, I had to prepare meticulously and thoroughly study my opponents to identify their strengths and weaknesses, enabling me to overcome and learn from them.
Nutrition also played a vital role. It helped me maintain my muscle mass and overall health, allowing me to train consistently. Moreover, I practised self-discipline by abstaining from alcohol and other stimulants, adhering to a regular sleep schedule, and ensuring I obtained sufficient rest. By embracing a structured and mindful approach, success became attainable.

Inner Sanctum: What sources of inspiration have propelled you towards success and kept your passion alive?
There are numerous athletes worldwide who have achieved remarkable accomplishments around the age of 50. They serve as role models for me. However, my primary motivation stems from the desire to portray a positive and inspiring image. I aspire to motivate young individuals who share a passion for bodybuilding. Engaging in bodybuilding not only promotes physical wellbeing and youthfulness but also fosters self-assurance. By continually refreshing myself and achieving notable milestones at my age, I aim to instil motivation in young people.
Inner Sanctum: Do you have any advice for beginners in bodybuilding?
My advice is to approach muscle development gradually and patiently. Rushing through the stages could lead to bone and joint problems, as well as injuries. Some individuals seek quick muscle gains by resorting to performance-enhancing drugs, but this approach is perilous as it can severely impact internal organs.

Inner Sanctum: How do you assess the sport of bodybuilding in Việt Nam?
The bodybuilding movement in Việt Nam has experienced rapid development. Young people exhibit a deep interest in and understanding of this sport. I believe that within the next two to three years, Vietnamese bodybuilding will emerge as one of the leading forces in Asia, alongside countries like India, Iran and South Korea.
Inner Sanctum: To maintain a balance between your personal and professional life, what principles do you employ?
I organise my work and training in a structured manner, allocating dedicated time to each aspect. Attempting to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously leads to a loss of focus and ultimately hampers success. Currently, I am focused on my business and training.
Inner Sanctum: Do you have any plans to retire from competitive bodybuilding?
I anticipate competing for a few more years, as my muscle mass remains suitable for competition. As the saying goes, "The older the ginger, the spicier it becomes."

Inner Sanctum: What are your future plans and goals?
My plans in bodybuilding revolve around the upcoming SEA Games in 2025. My goal is to secure the gold medal at that event, completing my mission and leaving a lasting mark.
Inner Sanctum: Do you want to share your knowledge and experience with others in the fitness industry?
Absolutely. I have a strong desire to share my practical experience in exercise and nutrition with individuals who are passionate about fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle. Currently, I am actively involved in coaching a team of trainers at Getfit Academy in HCM City. It brings me great joy to impart my knowledge and help others achieve their fitness goals. VNS
