City golf tournament to raise scholarship money
The fourth annual Jinro
Golf Tournament kicks off today at the Viet Nam Golf&Country Club in Thu Duc
district to collect scholarship money for the Phu My Hung-based Korean
International School and students majoring in Korean at HCM City’s National
University of Social Science and Humanities.
One hundred and fifty
amateur golfers are taking part in the tournament, which has been organised by
the South Korean-based Jinro company.
Its main sponsors are the
Palazzo Club and the HCM City Korean Association.
Co-ordinators have once
again set out to raise at least VND150 million (US$10,000).
Street
children to compete in football tournament
A football tournament for
street children from city shelters will be held on May 15 at HCM City’s Tao
Dan Football Club, District 1.
Twenty football teams will
compete in a round robin with three matches. Each team of seven players will
play a 40-minute game.
Several teams from
international and city schools have also been invited.
"We would like to
give street children a chance to enjoy their lives. This is also an opportunity
for disadvantaged kids to mix and share experiences with other children their
age," said Vu Khanh Truong, a representative of the 15 May School and
organiser of the event.
Women’s
boxing club to hold first championships in Thai Binh
The first National Women
Boxing Club Cup will kick-off on May 19 in the northern province of Thai Binh’s
Sports Competition Hall.
Boxers will compete for
medals in nine categories ranging from 46kg to 67kg. All national team members
will represent their clubs.
It is the first event at
national level for female boxers. This follows a competition held early last
month for selected national team members.
The tournament will
attract many clubs from Hai Phong, HCM City, the Army and Nghe An. It is
expected to draw a large crowd.
Viet
Nam to compete in five sports in Asian Indoor Games
Viet Nam is to compete in
five sporting events at the first Asian Indoor Games in Thailand.
The team being dispatched
to the event includes 60 athletes. They will compete in track and field,
swimming, dance, aerobics, and Thai muay.
While many top Vietnamese
athletes would like to attend the first Asian Indoor Games, their preparations
for the 23rd SEA Games necessitate sitting the meet out in order to train in the
Philippines.
A delegation for the first
Asian Indoor Games will be named in August.
National
sepak takraw team to compete in Ha Noi Open
The national sepak takraw
team will participate in the International Sepak Takraw Ha Noi Open Championship
from May 13 to 18 in the Ha Noi Combinatorial Sports Palace.
According to Ha Kha Luan,
Deputy Director of the National Sports and Physical Training Committee, both the
men’s and women’s teams will meet difficulties in this event because
important senior players have either retired or are training for other events.
The host will receive
seven foreign teams including strong teams from China, Thailand, Malaysia and
Myanmar.
Two Vietnamese teams are
expected to get in amongst the medals. — VNS
