Nhi wins Việt Nam’s first gold at world championship

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam won a gold medal at the World Wushu Championship on November 19 in Texas, US.

Đặng Trần Phương Nhi topped the podium in the women's nangun event with 9.760 points.

He Jianxin of Hong Kong and Tan Cheong Ming of Malaysia came second and third, respectively.

Earlier, Nhi earned silver in the women's nandao, placing behind Wu Jianing of China. Lucy Lee of the hosts took bronze.

The team's senior athletes Dương Thúy Vi and Hoàng Thị Phương Giang will compete next and are expected to bring more medals home.

Former world champion Vi will take part in the women's jianshu and qiangshu while SEA Games champion Giang will perform in the gunshu and daoshu.

The sanda athletes such as Nguyễn Thị Lan, Ngô Thi Phương Nga and Huỳnh Đỗ Đạt will also compete in their fighting competitions.

The 16th world championship will wrap up on November 20 in the US time.

This signature event, held every two years, features about 800 athletes from more than 80 countries and territories from Asia, Europe, Africa, Pan America and Oceania and around 30,000 spectators.

They compete in 22 taolu (performance) events and 14 weight categories from 48kg to 75kg for men and women in sanda (combat) events.

In the last edition in 2019 in China, Việt Nam won one gold, two silvers and four bronze medals. —  VNS
