Trang, Linh beat rivals to enter World Badminton Championship second round

HÀ NỘI — Vũ Thị Trang and Nguyễn Thùy Linh of Việt Nam made impressive first-round wins at the ongoing World Badminton Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

Trang, world No 80, on August 23, defeated Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia, who is No 54, by 21-10, 21-17, to advance to the second round.

She will next meet Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark. Blichfeldt, world No 14, got a bye to the second round.

Earlier, national No 1 Linh made a big bang when the world No 60 came from behind to beat No 27 Aya Ohori of the hosts 12-21, 21-19, 21-11.

In the next stage, the Tokyo Olympian will face a tougher rival, An Se Young, who is the world and tournament No 3 seed.

On the men's side, Việt Nam's badminton legend Nguyễn Tiến Minh, world No 91, lost to No 16 Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 8-21, 6-21 and was knocked out. — VNS
