Nestled in the waters off the coast of Bình Định Province, Hòn Khô Island is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its otherworldly seaweed landscapes. During the peak season, from May to July, this small island transforms into a mesmerising natural wonder, drawing tourists from near and far.

Hòn Khô Island, part of the Nhơn Hải fishing village, lies about 20km from the bustling city of Quy Nhơn. Though only about 300m from the mainland, the island can only be reached by a 10-15 minute boat ride, adding to its sense of seclusion and adventure.

During the seaweed season, the island's waters come alive with a vibrant tapestry of yellow, looming seaweed fields that stretch out beneath the clear blue sea. This abundant marine vegetation not only creates a breathtaking visual spectacle, but also serves as a vital habitat for a diverse array of underwater life.

Scuba diving and snorkelling allows visitors to immerse themselves in this rich ecosystem, observing the intricate interactions between the seaweed, coral reefs, and a myriad of marine creatures.

For those who prefer to stay dry, the low tide offers the opportunity to explore the island's hidden treasures. The ancient city wall, submerged for centuries, emerges from the water, its weathered stones now draped in a lush seaweed mantle. Tourists delight in capturing the magical sight, as the verdant 'seaweed path' winds along the sea.

Mi Thảo, a tourist from Phủ Lý City, Hà Nam Province, said: "Seaweed grows all over the sea surface, each canopy of seaweed sways and curves under the blue sea water, creating a truly magical and emotional scene. The feeling is wonderful. The sea water is clear here, and the people in this fishing village are very friendly."

The crystal-clear waters surrounding Hòn Khô Island are a testament to the region's commitment to environmental preservation. Nhơn Hải Commune has implemented numerous initiatives to safeguard the marine ecosystem, including seabed clean-ups and public awareness campaigns. This dedication has allowed the seaweed to flourish, providing a bountiful harvest for the local community.

Seaweed is not merely a visual delight, it also holds significant nutritional and medicinal value. The harvesting of this aquatic plant has become a valuable source of income for the people of Nhơn Hải, improving their livelihoods and contributing to the regional economy.

Beyond the seaweed, Hòn Khô Island offers a wealth of other attractions for visitors. The island's rocky beaches, while not typical for sunbathing, are remarkably clean and serene. During the breeding season, sea turtles come to the island to lay their eggs, adding to the island's ecological richness.

Jet skiing, rowing and paddleboarding allow tourists to explore the island's waters in an exhilarating manner. Those seeking a more immersive experience can opt for free diving, scuba diving or sea walking, with the guidance of local experts.

The culinary delights of Nhơn Hải fishing village also draw visitors to the island. Specialty dishes, such as the renowned squid pancakes and a variety of fresh seafood, including lobster, sea urchin and sea snail, can be savoured at the restaurants and raft houses along the Nhơn Hải embankment.

With its compact size, Hòn Khô Island can be comfortably explored in a single day, making it an ideal addition to a Quy Nhơn City itinerary. As the seaweed season reaches its peak, the island transforms into a natural wonder that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression on all who venture to this magical destination. VNS
