Ninh Bình's river of rice

An aerial view of tourist boats on Ngô Đồng River.

NINH BÌNH — Spectacular fields of mature yellow rice line a river dotted with karst mountains, forming a natural painting in the northern province of Ninh Bình, some 90km south of the capital city Hà Nội.

Situated inside Tràng An Landscape Complex, Tam Cốc – Bích Động Scenic Site is known as the home of some of the most beautiful rice fields in Việt Nam.

Tourists can take a boat trip down Ngô Đồng River, feasting their eyes on the yellow rice along the banks.

The boat trip takes visitors through three natural caves with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites.

The complex has been recognised as a mixed cultural and natural property. It includes the Hoa Lư Ancient Capital, the Tràng An-Tam Cốc-Bích Động Scenic Landscape and the Hoa Lư Special-Use Forest.

The property covers 6,200ha, and is surrounded by a buffer zone of more than 6,000ha, mostly rural land covered in rice paddies.

Ninh Bình Tourism Week 2019 is taking place in the area right now to highlight the natural beauty. Themed Yellow Colour of Tam Cốc – Tràng An, the event is yet another reason for tourists to the site. — VNS

Boats carrying tourists exit one of the three spectacular caves on the river route.
Tourists enjoy the views. Despite the natural beauty of this time of year, fewer people visit during the summer months.
