HA NOI (VNS) — Trinh Thi Bich Nhu set a new record in the women's 50-m freestyle S6 event at the ASEAN Para Games (APG) in Singapore yesterday.

The Vietnamese finished the competition with a time of 40.60sec which demolished the earlier record of 54.70 set by Josephine Roble Bea Rema of the Philippines in 2009.

Nhu's teammate Nguyen Thi Sa Ri came second, with a timing of 58.26sec, while Aw May San from Myanmar was third clocking 58.90sec.

Earlier, Le Tien Dat won his second gold and a second Games record of 33.74 in the men's 50m free style – S7 event.

Last Friday, Dat was crowned winner in the men's 100m breaststroke – SB6 and his timing of 1:37.55 scaled new heights at the Games.

A few minutes earlier, Vo Thanh Tung claimed his third title in the men's 50m freestyle – S5. His two other victories were in the 100m freestyle and 4x50m medley.

He still has one event in the 50m backstroke remaining today.

Asian winner Vo Huynh Anh Khoa came first in the men's 50m freestyle – S9, with a timing of 28.08. Teammate Nguyen Hoang Nha took the silver.

Khoa is the ‘richest' athlete in Viet Nam at present with four golds in his bag.

Vietnamese swimmers, who also pocketed medals in different categories yesterday, topped the swimming ranking with a total of 16.

Dang Van Cong won a silver in the men's 100m backstroke – S8, while Le Thi Tram was second in the women's 50m free style – S10.

Nguyen Thi Den, Le Thi Dung and Nguyen Duc Thien each brought home a bronze.

The third record for the Viet Nam team went to Dang Thi Linh Phuong in the women's up-to-50kg powerlifting event.

Phuong's final 93kg is the Asian record, is 8kg heavier than the one she set up in the previous Games in Myanmar last January.

Earlier, Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan added another gold to Viet Nam's bag in the women's up-to-55kg event with a lift of 100kg.

Her teammate Ma Phuong Quang grabbed a silver in the men's up-to-72kg class.

In athletics, Vu Thi Kim Thuy completed the longest leap of 4.22m in the women's long jump – F11/12 event to take her gold.

Nguyen Hoang Minh opened the day for Viet Nam with a gold in the men's 800m – T11/12 with a timing of 2:04.66. His teammate Nguyen Van Binh was second clocking 2:05.94.

Minh narrowly lost to Thai Songphinit Suphachai two years ago. This year he repaid the debt to take the crown while Suphachai went down to third place clocking 2:17.36.

Le Van Manh triumphed in the men's 400m T37 category. He took 57.46sec to grab the 12th gold for the team.
