HA NOI (VNS)– Two Vietnamese cyclists, Tran Van Cuong and Le Anh Dung, will be sent to train in South Korea in one month and a half in preparation for international tournaments.

Under coach Tran Van Hai, Cuong (20) and Dung (21) will focus on track cycling at the Korean Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO) Cycle Training Centre in Yeong-Ju City and Yang Yang Velodrome in Yang Yang City.

The US$15,300 course under the auspices of the Korean partners including the KSPO, the Vietnam Sports Platform and their Olympic Committee will start on Monday and last until October 17. The Vietnamese will be given special training by a former Korean national team member.

"The training course is the first step in an agreement between Viet Nam and Korea to develop track cycling in Viet Nam. It will help to provide qualified athletes to compete at the 18th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Incheon, Korea, next year and the 19th ASIAD in Ha Noi five years later," said Lam Quang Thanh, deputy head of Viet Nam Sports Administration.

Producing world-class cyclists is part of a long-term commitment highlighted by a project to build a velodrome for up to $500 million in My Dinh.

The project, which includes an Olympic-standard indoor stadium and facilities for badminton, table tennis and volleyball, is now being licensed. – VNS
