HA NOI (VNS) — Becamex Binh Duong has lifted their third Super Cup trophy after winning 1-0 over Hai Phong on their home turf at Go Dau Stadium.
Striker Nguyen Anh Duc scored the only goal of the match at the 33rd minute with a close-range shot.
The national team member made a beautiful volley to the high far corner of the net, which silenced goalkeeper Nguyen Thanh Thang of Hai Phong while causing the whole stadium to explode in celebration on Saturday.
Duc's goal came after many missed chances by both teams, in a match in which the visitors were considered the weaker team. Hai Phong was not in good shape under new coach Truong Viet Hoang, while midfielder Dinh Tien Thanh was sidelined because of injury.
Binh Duong, on the other hand, gathered all of their best elements, except for striker Le Cong Vinh, who was busy with his wedding.
Nguyen Trong Hoang, Mosses Oloya and Abass Cheikh Dieng continuously threatened Thang's area. But none of them could find the net.
Hai Phong also had their chances, as forward duo Andre Diego Fagan and Lucas De Souza Goncalves gave goalie Bui Tan Truong a difficult test.
However, the two teams failed to increase the score of the match.
V-League's champions Binh Duong enjoyed VND200 million (US$9,500) and paid a debt of losing 0-2 to Hai Phong four months ago in the final of the National Cup.
Their striker Duc was voted the best player of the game.
Previously, Binh Duong twice won the Super Cup in 2007 and 2008.
The Super Cup match marked the opening of the new national football season.
The V-League will kick off on January 4 and Binh Duong will host Dong Thap while Hai Phong welcome Song Lam Nghe An.
