HCM CITY (VNS) — Arguably Viet Nam's most popular boy band of all time, MTV, will perform live at a concert in HCM City that will showcase the milestones in its 15-year career.

The event at 8pm next Saturday (June 6) at the Nguyen Du Sports Stadium in District 1 will be the three-member band's first live show since reuniting in 2011 after a four-year split.

Phan Dinh Tung, a former member who has not returned to the group, will join his former partners Le Minh, Anh Tuan, and Thien Vuong to sing some of their famous numbers from the past like Ao Xanh (Green shirt) and Nhu La Tinh Yeu (Likely Love).

Tung said the show would give him a chance to re-live the times when he was a member of the band.

"That was a beautiful period in my singing career."

Rapper Karik who worked with MTV for the song Chuyen Thang Say (Story of a Drunk) will perform the song Cha (Father) together with the trio.

The band will also be joined by singer Cam Ly, choreographer Huynh Men, and two members of the well-known comedy troupe BB&BG.

The concert will be broadcast live on VTV9, VTV-Hue, and several other local channels.

Modern rock style

Le Minh, Anh Tuan, Phan Dinh Tung, and Hung Vu came together in 2000, and their modern rock style quickly became very popular.

Right in the first year they won the Voice of HCM City singing contest.

In 2001 they released the single Nhu La Tinh Yeu (Likely Love), which went on to win the MTV Video Music Award and VTV Bai Hat Toi Yeu (VTV Songs I Love) with the most votes.

MTV's other songs like Nguoi Con Gai Khoc (The Girl who is Crying), Ao Xanh (Green Shirt), Nguoi Ra Di (Leaver) also became wildly popular.

The band began to be invited to major music events like An Tuong Sai Gon (Sai Gon's Impression), Mot Thoang Viet Nam (Viet Nam at a Glance), Mot Thoang Sai Gon (Sai Gon at a Glance) and Lan Song Xanh (Blue Wave).

In 2002 MTV made its first national tour, performing in Ha Noi, Da Nang, HCM City, and several provinces in the south-west.

It also released an album titled Ao Xanh (Green Shirt) and won the Mai Vang (Golden Apricot) Award for the top band.

In 2003 the band's third album, Thien Duong Tim Dau (How to Find Paradise), won a prize at VTV Bai Hat Toi Yeu.

The next year was a watershed for the band — Phan Dinh Tung and Hung Vu dropped out to pursue solo careers and Thien Vuong made his entry.

MTV then began to focus on playing the guitar and composing.

In 2005 it released the album Toi Muon Biet Vi Sao (I want to Know Why) with six songs composed by Anh Tuan and two by Le Minh. The band also collaborated with other singers to form a rock band called MTV & Friends, releasing the album Thoi Gian (Time) and winning the award for the Most Loved Music Band at the 2006 Lan Song Xanh (Blue Wave Award).

The first ever live show titled MTV & Friends was staged at Lan Anh theatre in HCM City in 2007, and it brought the curtain down on the band's first avatar. — VNS
