Ceremony in capital city honours founders of Xam singing

HA NOI (VNS)— A ceremony was held at the Hao Nam communal house in Ha Noi yesterday to honour the founders of xam singing, a genre of music and performance popular in rural northern Viet Nam a long time ago.

During the Tran dynasty, about 700 years ago, the singing provided a way for visually impaired people to earn a living in the northern provinces.

In recent years, the traditional art has been revived by the Viet Nam Music Development Centre (VMDC).

Every Saturday, xam performances are held at Dong Xuan Market in Ha Noi.

Yesterday's event was attended by xam artists and researchers from the VMDC and the Viet Nam Musicians' Association.-VNS
