DA NANG — A Canadian fireworks team will light up the night sky during the opening of the 4th Da Nang International Fireworks Competition on April 29.
This year's competition, titled Colourful Da Nang, will feature several fireworks teams that have won previous fireworks competitions in Da Nang in a festival that pits champion against champion.
The Canadian group, called the David Whysall team, will compete with teams from France, China, Italy and Viet Nam during the two-day festival.
In the event's sponsorship signing ceremony yesterday, a vice chairman of the Da Nang People's Ccommittee, Vo Duy Khuong, said the city has raised over VND27 billion (US$1.2 million) for the event from 24 domestic sponsors.
"This year's competition will be a very special event for the city as we have invited four teams who won the champions in previous years," said Khuong.
"It will be a rendezvous of champions.
"The fireworks competition has been a major festive event since its debut in 2008."
The vice chairman also said the competition is a great opportunity to boost the city's tourism and trade promotions.
During the competition, the city also hold flower releasing in the Han River, culinary fair, stone art performance and flower procession on the river bank.
According to festival's organising committee, the city will host about 400,000 tourists during the fireworks competition.
A 16,000-seat stage will be set up at the Han River port along the city's main road of Bach Dang.
The competition's jury will include Vietnamese artists, musicians and foreign diplomats.
In previous competitions, Canada's Davis Whysall won the first prize in 2008, while China's Liuyang Dancing team took the title in 2009.
France's Jacques Couturier Organisation clinched the first prize in 2010, and Italy's Parente were last year's champions. — VNS
