Chess masters secure five Asian golds

HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese masters pocketed five gold medals, all in the standard chess category, at the Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 in Bali, Indonesia on October 20.

Athletes competed in six age categories from U8 to U18 for both boys and girls.

Among the winners from Việt Nam were Nguyễn Thiên Ngân in the girls' U18. She earned 6.5 points from nine matches. Teammate Vũ Bùi Thị Thanh Vân had the same points but took a silver due to her lower average rating.

Nguyễn Hồng Nhung secured her second gold at the tournament in the girls' U16. The Hanoian master took 7.5 points to top the podium, leaving teammate Nguyễn Mỹ Hạnh An seven points behind.

The result gave her the International Master title.

Nguyễn Quốc Hy won the boys' U16, Đào Minh Nhật triumphed in the boys' U18, and Phạm Trần Gia Phúc was champion in the boys' U14. 

Earlier, Việt Nam won five golds in the rapid chess category.

The team will take part in the last category of blitz chess on October 21. —VNS
