City blasts way to top at junior air shooting event


Ho Viet Thanh Sang broke the junior record in the boys' 10m air rifle and won a gold medal for Quang Nam on the final day of the National Junior Air Shooting Championship at Da Nang Sport Centre No 3 yesterday.

DA NANG (VNS)— Ho Viet Thanh Sang broke the junior record in the boys' 10m air rifle and won a gold medal for Quang Nam on the final day of the National Junior Air Shooting Championship at Da Nang Sport Centre No 3 yesterday.

Sang, 15, who competed in the under 16 years age group, scored 569 points, smashing the old record of 556 set in 2009 by Ha Noi's Nguyen Danh Manh.

Sang and his teammates also set up a new record in the team event with an accumulated 1,683 points, beating the old record set by the Ha Noi team (1,630 points).

However, HCM City were the overall winner at the championship when they bagged eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals after three days of competition.

Ha Noi came second with five golds, five silvers and three bronzes, while the Army team placed third with four gold, four silver and five bronze medals.

In the boys' 10m air rifle under 18 years group, Bui Anh Tung from Vinh Phuc, Thai Xuan Thong of HCM City and Vu Van Thang of Vinh Phuc all broke the old record, but Tung became the new record holder as he scored 582 points, shaving 12 points off the old record set by Vu Tan Duong from the Army team.

Vinh Phuc's athletes accumulated 1,705 points to win gold and set a new record in the team event (the old record was 1,655 points).

The championship, which drew 150 young shooters between the ages of 16 and 18, set up 17 new junior national records. – VNS
