HCM CITY (VNS) — The National Swimming Championships proved a roaring success for HCM City swimmers, who won 15 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals to dominate the medal table.

The championships, which ended yesterday at the Phu Tho Swimming Club, saw Da Nang come second with nine gold, four silver and five bronze medals while Long An won three gold, five silver and seven bronze medals to finish third.

Ha Noi, the country's major sporting centre, were the biggest disappointments of the tourney, failing to win a single gold medal and ranking second from the bottom with just two silvers and one bronze.

The five-day championships also saw six national records being shattered. HCM City's swimmers set five new records while Binh Phuoc set the remaining one.

Female swimmer and Olympian Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen, of HCM City, was in the spotlight throughout the competition.

She broke three national records in the women's 50m butterfly, the women's 100m freestyle and the women's 50m freestyle events and another record with three teammates in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay.

Rising young star Tran Duy Khoi, 15, another swimmer from HCM City, also set a new record in the men's 200 individual medley event.

The remaining record was set by Le Thi My Thao of Binh Phuoc Province in the women's 1,500m freestyle. The 16-year-old swam the distance at 17:31.73, 0.81 second faster the previous record. — VNS
