Coconut fest sets three records

BEN TRE — Three national records including the first collection of traditional music instruments made with materials from the coconut palm were set in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Ben Tre.

The records were set during the five-day Coconut Festival that wrapped up in the province on Tuesday.

The two records recognised by the Viet Nam Record Book were the "longest coconut road" and the "biggest coconut made with coconut fibre" at the third Coconut Festival.

The "coconut road" was 250m long and covered an area of 6,000sq.m. The road was lined with coconut trees, houses, gardens and stores that used a large number of coconut palms, fruits, shells and fibre.

Viet Nam's first collection of traditional music instrument made from coconut shells and fibre was created by Le Thanh Liem and Vo Van Ba, residents of Ben Tre.

The two men spent nearly a year to complete the collection, which has 27 items including drums, Vietnamese violin and the one-stringed zither.
