Faldo highlights first Laguna Classic

THUA THIEN-HUE  (VNS) — More than 100 golfers from Asia and Viet Nam will compete in the inaugural Laguna Classic amateur golf tournament at Laguna Lang Co Golf Club later this week.

Golfers will compete in men's and women's handicap divisions in 36 holes stroke-play format, with Sir Nick Faldo presenting prizes as well as conducting a pre-tournament golf clinic and discussing his playing career that netted 41 professional tournament victories, including three US Masters.

The tournament winner, based on the lowest gross score, will receive a golf holiday package from Banyan Tree Group and lifetime membership at Laguna Lang Co Golf Club worth US$24,000.

A new Laguna Park Lang Co home worth close to $300,000 and a Mercedes-Benz E Class saloon worth $100,000 can be won for a hole-in-one during the tournament.

Numerous other prizes for net and daily winners in three men's and one ladies' handicap division, longest drive and nearest the pin also will be presented.

The six-time major winner will open a the clinic and host an exchange with participants before the opening on Friday.

The two-day tournament is open to all amateur golfers.

The inaugural Laguna Golf Classic 2015 is a four-day 72-hole tournament that will take place at two scenic destinations, Laguna Phuket Golf Club in September 2015, followed by Laguna Lang Golf Club.

Since opening in November 2012, the course is affectionately known as the ‘Buffalo Kick' due to its dramatic setting and challenging design that requires skill and a steady golfing mind to play well or it will ‘kick' back.

Water buffaloes are a common sight in this historic region and can be seen ploughing the paddy fields that border the course. — VNS
