HCM CITY (VNS) — Self-taught mechanic Tran Quoc Hai and his son Tran Quoc Thanh were among those honoured with the 2014 Men of the Year Awards at a ceremony in HCM City on Monday for helping the Cambodian army repair and upgrade its armoured vehicles and building a new one.
After upgrading or repairing 10 Soviet-era vehicles for Cambodia, they were given the green light to build a new one, which they duly did, and for this they won the award in the Father and Son category.
At the annual event that recognises the year's most influential men in a variety of fields like art, sports, architecture, entertainment, and business, Tran Bao Son won the Leading actor of the Year award.
An entrepreneur-turned actor, Son has so far acted in seven films.
Vietnamese-Swedish actor Kim Ly received the Breakthrough Actor of the Year award.
The Team of the Year award was won by film director Quang Huy and actors Son Tung MTP, Pham Quynh Anh, Hua Vi Van, Ngo Kien Huy, and Hari Won who starred in Huy's film Chang Trai Nam Ay (Man in the Past).
The Architect of the Year title went to Vo Trong Nghia, winner of numerous international awards, for a second time for his environmentally-friendly designs.
Ngo Thanh Hoa was the Chef of the Year and Thach Kim Tuan, the Sportsman of the Year.
Duc Tuan was the Singer of Year for his achievements in a 15-year career.
Others honoured for their accomplishments were Quoc Trung who got the Musicman award, emcee Phan Anh who got the Vespa Sprint Stylish Man award, and designer Ly Giam Tien.
The Pretty Woman of the Year award went to singer Toc Tien for her "beauty and professionalism".
The awards are given by The Thao Van Hoa & Dan Ong (Sports, Culture and Men) magazine based on votes by its editor-in-chief, creative director, editor, and journalists based on various criteria like professionalism, contributions to a field and influence on other people.
Do Doan Phuong, deputy editor-in-chief of The Thao Van Hoa (Sports and Culture) newspaper, which co-presents the awards, said, "The Men of the Year Awards are set to expand in scale and become the most prestigious award for men who make outstanding contributions."
The ceremony saw the participation of many celebrity guests and featured special performances. — VNS
