DA NANG — Fliers from the US, France, Japan and Poland are all ready for the opening day of the Da Nang International Paramotor Race at Bien Dong Park today.

Twenty-five athletes began training on Wednesday and are eager to take to the skies across the coastal city.

"It's the first time that I've joined in an international competition in Viet Nam. The weather in the morning in the city is quite good for us to train, but we have difficulties when the wind blows strongly in the afternoon," said Japanese pilot Ryoya Igarashi.

"I've been practising the paramotor for 13 years and I hope to win the championship this year. However, I will face tough opponents from the US and France," he said.

Emilia Plak from Poland, who is the only female pilot in the competition, said she was impressed by the city's beautiful beaches.

"I feel free and safe when I fly. I'm honoured to be the only female athlete in the competition," Plak said.

The Polish pilot always received applause from local spectators whenever she takes off or lands on My Khe Beach.

Didier Eymin from France said he had waited a long time for the competition after flying across Ha Long Bay 21 years ago.

Competitors will start flying this morning in four categories – slalom, speed, team and rescue.

The organising committee will present awards to the winners tomorrow. — VNS
