Foreign choirs join competition

QUANG NAM (VNS)— The third International Choir Competition opened yesterday in Hoi An, gathering 15 choirs from the US, Germany, Taiwan, Australia, S Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Viet Nam.

Indonesia has sent seven teams to the competition while the host is represented by three groups of singers.

"We hope to build friendship between nations and people through musical exchanges," said Tran Minh Ca, deputy chairman of the Quang Nam Province People's Committee.

"We also expect the power of music to break down barriers and promote peace around the world," Ca said at yesterday's opening ceremony.

The two-day competition will start today and the results will be announced on Saturday by a panel of international experts.

The teams will also hold two performances on the streets of Hoi An for the public. — VNS
