As France celebrates its National Day tomorrow (July 14), Viet Nam News presents an article written by French Ambassador to Viet Nam Jean-Noel Poirier.

I am happy to highlight the quality of the relationships between France and Viet Nam. Relations between France and Viet Nam are the result of historical and cultural heritage. Over decades, very strong links have been forged between our peoples. Our relationship is based on friendship and trust, the foundation of co-operation that we disclaim in all sectors.

The year 2013 marks a major milestone in our relationship. The celebration of 40 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the Year of France-Viet Nam provide an opportunity for our two peoples to get even closer.

On the French side, events have been organised in all areas - cultural, economic and political. More than 100 events are scheduled in Viet Nam, with the support of French companies operating in Viet Nam.

On October 12, a concert of popular music will be held at Hang Day Stadium in Ha Noi with the participation of French and Vietnamese artists. In December, French artists, the Allumeurs d'Images, will hold a light show at Reunification Palace in HCM City.

Our two peoples know and appreciate each other. Vietnamese people cherish the architectural legacy of the French period. Viet Nam is part of the background of many French families; the Vietnamese community in France is also remarkably dynamic.

Politically, France has supported Viet Nam, from the beginning of the Doi Moi policy. In 1993, with the visit of President François Mitterrand, the first visit by a western head of state since the end of the war, France showed its support for Viet Nam in its integration into the international economy. France supports Viet Nam in its remarkable development.

In academic terms, we are working today to train the elite of tomorrow in Viet Nam. There are several programmes and institutions, including the University of Science and Technology of Ha Noi, involved in 59 successful higher education or French research institutions.

On cultural development, the French Institute of Viet Nam, now in Ha Noi, HCM City, Hue and Da Nang, is our primary tool for promoting the French language and culture. In Ha Noi, "l'Espace" is a key player in the artistic and cultural scene. It organised 50 shows in 2012, as well as exhibitions, conferences, debates.

Our relationship is strong and has a bright future. I wish everyone a happy France-Viet Nam year ! — VNS
