French artists draw inspiration from local landscapes


A French painter based in Hoi An is showcasing his paintings on Vietnamese themes made on rhamnoneuron paper, which is used for the traditional Dong Ho paintings, at an exhibition in Hue.

THUA THIEN – HUE — A French painter based in Hoi An is showcasing his paintings on Vietnamese themes made on rhamnoneuron paper, which is used for the traditional Dong Ho paintings, at an exhibition in Hue.

Jean Cabane's paintings are done with natural ash obtained from burning bamboo, which is popular in Viet Nam.

The 63-year-old's exhibition, titled Landscapes, Colours Reflecting Culture, comprises 31 works depicting landscapes and cultural vignettes from places he has visited.

Considered a friend by people in central Viet Nam, Cabane works with several charities, actively mobilising support for health care projects for the poor in the provinces of Quang Nam, Da Nang, Thua Thien - Hue, and Quang Tri.

He is also a member of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange in Da Nang.

He has held exhibitions in major French cities such as Paris, Bordeaux and Nimes.

The exhibition, on at the French Cultural Centre, will run until April 1.

Another French painter, Denis Boywd, also has an exhibition of paintings depicting Vietnamese landscapes in Hue.
