HA NOI (VNS)— The Ha Noi Goethe Institute will feature a week of German film starting this Friday.
Under Snow (2011) will start the week, taking viewers into a mountain village in Japan.
Directed by Ulrike Ottinger, the documentary combines traditional kabuki plays with poetry and music by Yumiko Tanaka to create a moving portrait of life in the tiny village. The screening will start at 7pm with English and Vietnamese subtitles.
The latest film adaptations of Brothers Grimm fairy tales will be presented over the weekend.
Cinderella and The Gallant Tailor will be shown on Saturday at 3 and 4pm, while Rapunzel and The Wishing Table will be screened on Sunday at the same times.
The following week will feature modern cinema with Barbara, This Ain't California, Vincent Wants to Sea, Men in the City 2, When We Leave and Three Fourths Moon.
Barbara and This Ain't California take place in the former East Germany. The tragicomedy Barbara, the most recent film by director Christian Petzold, depicts a young doctor's conflict between staying in the country and leaving.
The film won the German Film Prize 2012 for best film and has also been nominated for the European Film Prize. The film will be screened on Saturday at 5.30pm and 7pm.
This Ain't California, a documentary about skateboarding youth, will be shown on Sunday at 5.30pm and 7pm.
At the screening of Three Fourths Moon next Tuesday at 7pm, Carmen Oberhofer of German film distributor Majestic, who was in charge of the public relations and marketing for the film, will give a brief introduction and engage in a dialogue with the audience.
When We Leave, the film debut of Feo Aladag, which was the German candidate for the 2011 Oscars as the Best Foreign Language Film and received numerous national and international awards, will be shown next Monday at 7pm.
The week of film will end with the hit comedy Men in the City 2 next Friday at 7pm.
All the films will be screened free with Vietnamese subtitles. — VNS
