HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm secured his highest world place at No 14 as the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced its latest rankings.

It is a two-step jump from No 16 where he was last placed, although he has not taken part in any competitions since his victory at the Biel International Chess Festival in July in Switzerland. But his elo rating of 2,741 is enough for him to reach this new career high.

Liêm, former world blitz champion, will next take part in the hugely important 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary from September 10 to 23.

He is currently living and working in the US where he is coach of the Webster University's chess team.

In addition to the training career, he occasionally takes part in international events to retain his world level. VNS
