HA NOI  (VNS) — Vietnamese sports saw the smallest winning of two gold medals in one day at the 27th Southeast Asian Games yesterday.

It was a disappointing day for Vietnamese sports and martial arts as athletes brought home only two gold medals, out of the 13 competitions for medals.

Viet Nam competed in the three finals in taekwondo, but only Le Huynh Chau came out on top to win the first gold medal of the day for Viet Nam. Chau defeated Ryan Chong Wy Lunn of Malaysia 6-1 in the men's 63kg final.

Vietnamese athletes then lost in the two remaining finals. Doan Thi Huong Giang lost 7-10 to Thai Phannapa Harnsujin in the women's 49kg, while Nguyen Thanh Thao was defeated by Sarita Phongsri from Thailand in the women's 53kg.

Vovinam participants probably gave up the most gold medals, as they won only one gold, while bringing home five silver medals.

Vovinam's only gold medal was won by Nguyen Thi Quyen Chan as she beat Paloy Barckkam of Laos 2-1 in the women's 60kg combat.

The five silver medals were won by Tran The Thuong and Lam Dong Vuong in the men's duel machette form; Huynh Khac Nguyen, Nguyen Van Cuong, Lam Dong Vuong and Tran Cong Tao in the men's multiple training; Tran Anh Tuan in the men's 55kg; Hua Le Cam Xuan and Mai Thi Kim Thuy in the women's duel sword form; and Hua Le Cam Xuan in the women's dragon-tiger form.

Viet Nam also missed the mark in Judo today, failing to win a gold medal. It received one silver medal, won by Bui Thi Hoa in the women's 63kg event, and three bronze medals, won by Ho Thi Nhu Van in the women's 57kg event, To Hai Long in the men's 81kg event and Nguyen Tan Cong in the men's 73kg competition.

In men's volleyball, Viet Nam repeated its victory of two years ago in Indonesia by a 25-23, 25-18, 27-25 win over hosts Myanmar in the bronze-medal match.

Also, Dao Thien Hai and Hoang Thi Nhu Y won a silver medal in chess. While kempo martial artists won a silver medal in the women's group of eight kenshi (performance) event.

After nine days of official competition, Thailand firmly stay on top of the ranking table with 93 gold medals.

Host Myanmar, who won a number of titles in martial arts yesterday, took over Viet Nam's second place, winning 70 gold medals.

Viet Nam, which had targeted to grab one place in the top three, are now in third place with 66 gold medals.

There will be only one more day for the athletes to let their talents shine before the biennial Games conclude tomorrow. — VNS
