HA NOI – Viet Nam's famous historical and cultural researcher Nguyen Vinh Phuc died last Saturday at the age of 86 in Ha Noi.

Nguyen Vinh Phuc, born in the northern province of Hung Yen's Yen My District, died of a serious illness at the hospital. Though not a native of Ha Noi, for dozens of years he was known as one of the most eminent historical and cultural researchers of the capital city. His passion for Ha Noi led him to publish a large number of books about the city, its customs and its people. His books include Ha Noi Streets and Roads and Ha Noi Over the Years.

He was also chief editor of valuable and precious books such as Ha Noi Roads, Questions and Answers about 1,000-year-old Thang Long, Ha Noi Tourism, Ha Noi – Land and its People and History of Thang Long – Ha Noi.

Phuc was a teacher of literature, history and geography in Ha Noi. While he was alive, he said that he did not know much about Ha Noi and he would like to learn more to catch up to his colleagues. The more he learned the more he discovered Ha Noi to be like a charming girl attracting him day by day.

He was conferred with the State title Distinguished Teacher and presented the Prize "Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Ha Noi", due to his great research contributions to the city.

His funeral will be held from 7am-9am on Thursday this week at the National Defense Ministry's funeral house at No 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Ha Noi. -- VNS
