DA NANG (VNS)— HCM City 1 team beat Binh Duong 1 2-1 in the men's team final to win the National Team Tennis Championship yesterday.

Teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien had a perfect day by winning his singles and doubles matches to take the trophy and prize money of VND30 million (US$1,400).

Thien, 18, took two hours to beat Hoang Thanh Trung of Binh Duong 1 in two sets, 7-5, 6-1.

The HCM City native struggled to win the first set in 1 hour and 15 minutes, but he overpowered his opponent in the second set with two aces and three break points.

Serving and winning the first game, Trung, who was once a ball-boy, did not keep his momentum in the second game, missing a break point.

Thien equalised in the second game, and won a break point in the third game before leading 3-1 in the fourth game.

Game five saw Thien dominating with 40-0 and a break point.

Trung, 34, did not turn around the situation with his defensive play and greater experience against a youthful teenager, losing the sixth and the seventh game.

In the second singles match, a rising star Ly Hoang Nam helped Binh Duong tie the score when he beat Trung Hieu 6-1, 6-1.

But Thien and his partner Do Quoc Khanh took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Thanh Trung and Anh Vu in the double match to complete a win for HCM City.

On Wednesday, HCM City also won the women's title. — VNS
