DA NANG — Teenager Tran Duy Khoi from HCM City won gold in the men's 200m backstroke to help the city win the National Short-course Swimming Championships in Hue City yesterday.
HCM City's athletes overpowered the championship with 16 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals, beating Quang Binh, who came in second with nine golds and two bronzes, while Da Nang took the third place with six golds, 14 silvers and nine bronzes.
Khoi, 15, swam in 2min 10.72sec, beating off Tran Van Trieu from Hai Phong and Ta Thanh Long of Ha Noi.
The teenager and his teammates then set up a new record in the men's 400m medley relay with a time in 3min 55.45sec, shaving off the old record (3min 58.04) three seconds.
The HCM City-born also bagged another gold in the 200m individual medley when he clocked in 2min 9.09sec at the 25m pool of the Hue Aquatic Sport Centre.
On Thursday, Khoi also set a new record in the men's 400m individual medley with a time of 4min 24.59sec, beating the old record of 4min 28.27sec.
Da Nang's Chau Ba Anh Tu, who won the Southeast Asian Games gold medal last year, cruised to win the men's 1,500m freestyle with a time of 16min 19.10sec.
Le Thi Viet Trinh, a national team member, finished first in the women's 200m breaststroke, clocking in 2min 37.89sec.
HCM City's Tran Tam Nguyen dominated the women's 200m freestyle, finishing first in 2min 4.76sec. — VNS
