The house owned by the Huynh Thuy family near the Tien River in Sa Dec Town in Dong Thap Province has become a popular destination for local and foreign tourists since it opened to the public in 2007.

The house is famous for its unique architecture which is a harmonious combination of Vietnamese, French and Chinese styles. It is the place that witnessed the love affair between Marguerite Duras, a well-known French writer who wrote the famous novel L'Amant, and Huynh Thuy Le, the son of the Huynh Family.

The house was built using precious wood in 1895. In 1917, Huynh Cam Thuan, father of Huynh Thuy Le, rebuilt the house in the style of a French villa, using both Oriental and Western architectural elements.

For more than 100 years, despite the destruction caused by time, the house remains intact with all its beautiful features.

The novel L'Amant has been translated into 43 languages and was made into a film of the same by French director Jean Jacques Annaud in 1992.

The famous novel and film has helped attract many tourists from France, the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the UK to the historic house in Dong Thap, which was named a national cultural-historic heritage in 2009.-VNS
