THUA THIEN - HUE (VNS)— Hue authorities have recognised a temple dedicated to local citizens and soldiers who died fighting French colonialists in the former royal capital as a cultural heritage site.

The recognition aims to protect the site from encroachment and degradation.

In 1885, French troops attacked the former capital, killing more than 1,200 people. May 23 is a day of mourning the city, and residents pay their respects to those who died every year at that time. A ceremony is also held in the temple to mark the anniversary.

The temple was built in 1894 by the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) to commemorate those killed during the battle, and is a place that embraces the patriotism and humanity of Hue's people. — VNS
