HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese gymnasts will get another chance to book their berth in the Summer Olympics in Brazil, despite their defeat at the world championships in Scotland recently.

Southeast Asian Games winner Pham Phuoc Hung's performance was poor in all categories at the world championships.

"His total points of 81.565 was very bad compared to what we had expected," Nguyen Kim Lan, general secretary of the Viet Nam Gymnastics Federation, said.

However, the Vietnamese gymnast has been listed as one of competitors at the pre-Olympics tournament, which will be the last qualification round to be held next April.

World Cup winner Phan Thi Ha Thanh also failed to claim an Olympic berth because of a knee injury.

Lan said Thanh would rest completely for two months after returning from Glasgow for her treatment.

Then she will join Hung in intensive training courses.

"The chances are open. We should just know how to use them," Lan said.

Both Hung and Ha had booked their 2012 London Olympic berths after winning bronze medals at the world tournament in the same year. — VNS
