HA NOI — Mai Nguyen Hung yesterday won the fourth stage of the 24th HCM City Television (HTV) Cup, beating 72 other cyclists.
Hung, who rides for Sai Gon Plant Protection, won the 109km stage from Hue to Da Nang, through the Phu Tuong, Phu Gia and Hai Van mountain passes.
He completed the stage in a time of 2:51.09 and recorded a top speed of 38.212kmh.
Phan Thanh Dien, of An Giang Plant Protection, and Nguyen Truong Tai, of Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap, came second and third.
Nine cyclists attempted to win the King of the Mountains title, breaking away from the main pack in the first few kilometres. In the end, it was Tran Le Minh Tuan who won the red jersey.
Ho Huynh Van An, of An Giang Plant Protection, won the yellow jersey for the best overall time of 6:59:43.
Today, cyclists will compete in the 131km fifth stage from Da Nang to Quang Ngai City.
This year's race, entitled Hanh Trinh Chien Thang (the Victory Journey), has attracted 11 teams.
The tournament consists of 15 stages covering a total distance of 1,800km through 10 provinces and cities.
Final stage will take place in HCM City on April 30 on the occasion of the Reunification Day.
The HTV Cup is considered Viet Nam's most prestigious cycling race. — VNS
