NAY PYI TAW (VNS) — Sprinter Vu Thi Huong assumed her dominance in short-distance races at the Southeast Asian Games with a gold medal double, while martial artists amassed a number of gold medals.

Huong, who easily won the women's 100m event on Tuesday, assumed her dominance in the short-distance events, as she did in the past, with another convincing victory in the women's 200m event.

Huong gave fans a feeling of pride again at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium as she powered her way to the finish line, leaving her opponents well behind, as she was on her way to the finish line to clock a time of 23.55s.

Neeranuch Klomdee of Thailand came in second, while another Vietnamese runner, Nguyen Thi Oanh, finished in third place.

Track and field athletes also brought home a bulk of medals, but with an absence of gold medals.

Pham Tien San won a silver in the men's steeplechase 3,000m event. While Dao Van Thuy finished second for a silver in the men's high jump, while Nguyen Van Dat won a bronze medal in the men's 1,500m.

Le Trong Hinh came in third in the men's 200m event, and Nguyen Thi Oanh also won a silver in the women's steeplechase 3,000m event.

Another bronze medal was won by Bui Thi Thao in the women's long jump, with her best attempt of 6m14.

In taekwondo, world champions Nguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu proved they remained unrivalled in their strongest event by defending their gold medal in the mixed doubles poomsae (performance) event.

Toan and Tu displayed a fine performance to score 8.355 points to beat a Thai duo and an Indonesia pair.

Pham Thi Thu Hien tasted her first Taekwondo victory at the regional level by wining the women's 62kg category, after defeating the home athlete 7-3 in the final.

Judo also contributed a gold medal with a victory from Huynh Nhat Thong, who beat home opponent Kap Cin Pau in the final to win a gold medal.

Further, Le Ngoc Van Anh and Nguyen Hoang Cam recorded 433 points to win a silver medal in the Judo Kata event.

The fourth gold medal from martial arts came from the pair Pham Thi Mao and Phan Thi Kieu Duyen, who was victorious in the women's Kumi Embu Pair Kyu Kenshi event.

In Kempo, Pham Thi Mao and Phan Thi Kieu won a gold medal, while Le Thi Thu Hang won a silver in the women's 57 kg category. Nguyen Viet Quoc and Nguyen Thanh Bao Mi also pocketed a silver.

In cycling, Mai Nguyen Hung won a silver medal after finishing second in the men's 163km road race.

In chess, Dao Thien Hai and Nguyen Van Huy clinched a silver in the men's pair transfer blitz event. — VNS
