Japanese calligrapher hits the capital


Japanese renowned calligrapher Takeda Souun will demonstrate his techniques and hold a workshop titled The Power of Calligraphy, at the Temple of Literature in Ha Noi this Saturday.
HA NOI (VNS)— Japanese renowned calligrapher Takeda Souun will demonstrate his techniques and hold a workshop titled The Power of Calligraphy, at the Temple of Literature in Ha Noi this Saturday.

He will also hold an open discussion with calligrapher Trung Hieu and members of Viet Nam's UNESCO Calligraphy Club.

A similar event will take place in the meeting hall at Hoai River Square, Hoi An City, in the central province of Quang Nam on August 24 and 25, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Japan – Viet Nam diplomatic relations.

Japanese renowned calligrapher Takeda

Souun is a famous calligrapher who was appointed Japanese Cultural Envoy for 2013 by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. He has held many demonstrations and lectures on calligraphy, as well as producing writings for various events around the world.

He has also worked alongside various artists including musicians and sculptors and has put on many original exhibitions, attracting large crowds around the world. This is the first time he has come to Viet Nam to put his calligraphy on display and hold demonstrations and workshops.

Calligrapher Hieu is well known for appearing on television and in the theatre. He won the prize for best actor at the 2009 Viet Nam Film Festival and 2012 Actor of the Year by the Viet Nam Stage Artists Association. He started studying calligraphy in 2001 and has become one of the most talented calligraphers from the Viet Nam Young Calligraphy Club. — VNS
