HA NOI —Le Quang Liem continued his winning streak at the Asian Continental Chess Championships in the United Arab Emirates on August 6.
Grandmaster Liem, who is seeded No. 1, beat GM Idani Pouya of Iran. With four points, the Vietnamese player has entered the top three in the Open pool's ranking table.
He will next play GM Gupta Abhijeet of India, who is in fourth place.
GM Nguyen Duc Hoa also pocketed a win over Irani GM Ghaem Maghami Ehsan. He secured a position in the top 10 and will next face off against GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore.
Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy enjoyed his second win here after beating Indian international master Kantholi Rathnakaran in the fifth-round match. His next rival will be IM Lou Yiping of China.
The only Vietnamese player who did not win on August 6 was GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, who bagged his fourth draw against GM Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan of Mongolia.
The No. 2 seed fell to the 37th spot, with only three points.
In the women's category, only Nguyen Thi Mai Hung of Viet Nam won on August 6 when she beat women's FIDE master Alattar Ghayda M of Jordan.
Hung will next play WFM Zhang Xiaowen from China.
IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen and women's GM Nguyen Thi Thanh An pocketed draws, while women's IM Le Kieu Thien Kim lost. — VNS
