Liem climbs in rankings after fourth-round win

HÀ NỘI (VNS) — Việt Nam's Grandmaster Le Quang Liem improved his ranking after his fourth-round win in the Asian Continental Chess Championship's open group on August 5 in the United Arab Emirates.

Liêm, the number one seed, defeated GM Kunte Abhijit of India, and ranked 10th with three points.

His teammate Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn, however, drew his game — his third draw — with GM Rhaman Ziaur of Bangladesh. The number two seed, Sơn is ranked 29th.

In other matches, GM Nguyen Duc Hoa beat Iranian master Maghsoodloo Parham. GM Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy drew international master Saiyn Zhanat of Kazakhstan.

In the next round, Liem will play GM Idani Pouya of Iran; Son will face Mongolia's GM Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan; Hoa will play GM Ghaem Maghmi Ehsan, also of Iran; and Huy will play India's IM Kantholi Rathnakaran.

In the women's competition, IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Le Kieu Thien Kim won their matches, while Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Nguyen Mai Hung were defeated in the fourth round.

All of them are placed in the middle of the rankings. — VNS
