NEW YORK (VNS) — Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem has helped his team Webster University win the President's Cup chess tournament in New York.
The six-member team won the championship with 9.5 points. Two-time Aeroflot Open champion Liem contributed 2.5 points with two wins and one draw.
UMBC, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, finished second with seven points.
Texas Tech ranked third with 6.5 points.
With this result, the HCM City-born Liem has added two points to his present Elo rating of 2,712 in the world ranking of the International Chess Federation.
The President's Cup, also known as the Final Four of College Chess, takes place in the first week of April every year. It brings together four American universities, all with strong chess programmes. – VNS
