HA NOI (VNS)– Viet Nam's chess ace Le Quang Liem notched up his first win at the 2013 Chess World Cup taking place at Tromso, Norway.
HCM City-born Liem, who ranks 42nd in the world and has an ELO of 2702, overcame Filipino player Oliver Barbosa after 43 moves.
Another Vietnamese competitor at the competition, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son enjoyed a win over Vladimir Akopian of Armenia after 48 moves.
Liem will face Barbosa and Son takes on Akopian again in the second leg of the first round today. – VNS
